Accessible building design

"See the ability, not the disability" Ken Davies

For over twenty years now Philip Newbold has been designing and converting buildings for people with disabilities and incorporating accessible design principles into all his buildings. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 has now been largely replaced by The Equality Act 2010 and while awareness of the issues surrounding the accessible credentials of buildings and their services by disabled people has been raised by the legislation, the design and provision of accessible facilities in our built environment is still woefully inadequate. We still have a long way to go in integrating unrestricted accessibility for all into our building design process

In spite of the fact that there are around 8.5 million disabled people in the UK, Architects too often see facilities for the disabled in building design as bolt-on afterthoughts to meet the requirements of Part M of the Building Regulations or BS:8300. They also tend to think of disabled people as wheelchair users while, for example, those with other physical disabilities, sight and hearing impairments or learning difficulties require equal consideration. We also have an ageing population which brings additional considerations in the accessible design of our buildings, as do the needs of infants, young children and their parents

We draw on a wealth of expertise and experience in providing integrated accessible design and project management services for a wide range of building sectors. These range from design and conversion of individual homes for people with specific disabilities resulting from personal injury or medical negligence through to Extra Care homes, Lifetime Homes and Education projects for children with special needs. We work with a number of consultants such as Case Managers, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists as well as special equipment manufacturers

We offer a confidential, Client-focused service from feasibility studies and budget estimates through to project completion. For individual Clients needing an accessible new home to meet their present and future needs and those of their carers, we can provide a search service to evaluate suitable properties for extension or adaptation. In order to assess an existing building for compliance with the current accessibility legislation, we can also offer an access audit service with a full report and recommendations

At new bold design we take a personal, holistic approach to building design and project management by considering the historical context, accessibility and energy conservation so we can deliver buildings that are fit for all our futures
